There are so many projects that can be completed thanks to greenhouse gardening. And Home Aquaponics is, in my opinion, one of the more exciting.
I liked the idea of Hydroponics, but the more I learned about it the less I liked having to use of chemicals to grow.
Along with the fact that you periodically had to dispose of these growing chemicals was also a deter ant.
However, Aquaponics uses a hydroponic system, and instead of chemicals, it actually uses naturally sustainable fish waste as nutrients instead of the chemical fertilizers.
These nutrients are filtered through the plants which works as a water filter for the fish, it is set up as a true ecosystem.
Take a look at this system put together at Malyspina College on Vancouver Island.
They used Travis Hughey's Barrel-ponics system. We have included his E-book Instruction plans with pictures below.
Here is a video of Travis Hughey's completed system here:
- this system was completed by students at Vancouver Islands Malyspina College.
Take a look here at Travis Hughey's plans for free: (they include step by step pictures and how to pages,it is a total of 101 pages of Aquaponic information)
Here are a few of the different kinds of fish growing in these systems:
Again here are just a few of the fish species being used in Auquaponic systems:
- Rainbow Trout
- Brown Trout
- Silver Perch
- Jade Perch
- Sleepy Cod
- Murray cod
